Historic Leinster House
Lambstongue Ltd.
Condition
94no. timber sash and casement windows dating from c1745 – c1980 with 71no. 2 - 4 leaf shutter sets.
The majority of window and shutter sets were structurally stable but in need of regular maintenance work. Over all conditions included paint degradation, localised wood rot, warping of timber, loose joint, excessive over-painting resulting in restriction of moving parts and obscuring decorative detailing, unbalanced sash weighting and insufficient draught-proofing.
Role
Assistant Project manager
Project Aim
Conservative repair of timber windows, associated shutters and ironmongery of Historic Leinster House. The repair work aimed to restrain the process of decay to the material of windows, with emphasis on the retention of original material and character of the windows
Project Implementation
-
An initial condition survey and estimation of scale of works was carried out on all the windows, shutters and ironmongery of the building contributing towards the project timetabling.
-
Advisory reports and memos were produced for the main contractor and client highlighting best practice conservation procedures for work specifications. These were regularly updated as needs required during works.
-
All windows, shutters and their associated ironmongery were documented and catalogued before and throughout works with reports, graphs and maps produced. These were used for the co-ordination of works as well as for historic record.
-
Packaging and storage procedures were produced for the regular transport of windows, shutters and ironmongery on site, in transit and in the workshop and were continually managed throughout all the phases of work.
-
The day-to-day activities of the workers on site and in the workshops were managed with Gantt charts, project trackers and the project management app, Basecamp®. Resource supply and management was co-ordinated through Basecamp® and regularly maintained inventories. Quality control and assessment of works at all stages was carried out before it could be signed off.
-
Summarised status and executive reports were produced weekly within Lambstongue Ltd. and fortnightly with the main contractor. Alongside this, regular risk assessment and administration management between the main contractor and Lambstongue Ltd. was carried out too.
